Renco® Lean-Meater®

Description

The Renco® Lean-Meater® is a truly unique device, giving direct electronic readings of backfat depth in big bright numbers. Proven accurate to within ± MM (.039) or 1 digit, this device can measure total thicknesses from 5-40 mm. It also has the ability to measure the third layer of backfat and will automatically detect the number of layers presentand the display of the result.

The primary use is the measurement of back fat in swine forthe determination of sow condition, gilt selection, quality and othergenetic aspects. Other uses include fat measurement in cattle, sheep andother land animals, as well as blubber measurement in aquatic animals.(The Lean-Meater® is not intended for measurement of muscle tissue.)

This device can be thought of as an electronic ruler.Ultrasonic pulses sent into the animal are reflected back to theinstrument from tissues of interest. The times until these echoes arereceived are translated into distances in mm. Measurements arenon-invasive—no piercing of the skin with the consequent danger ofinfection. The animals are neither hurt nor irritated. The use of LED’s assures sharp,crisp, readings. Only the Lean-Meater® uses an LED display, which willoperate over a wider range of temperatures and be more visible underadverse light conditions.

The instrument features rugged all-metal construction and aNickel Metal Hydride (“green”) rechargeable battery, which does not needto be recycled. Battery charging and low power indicators are alsoprovided.
