Western Christian countries celebrate Saint Nicholas Day (or the Feast of Saint Nicholas) on the eve of December 5th into the 6th. Saint Nicholas was a Christian bishop known for miracles and secretly giving gifts. He is now considered the patron saint of little children, sailors, merchants and students. In our culture, this jolly man, gift giving man in his red suit with white furry trim and long flowing white beard is associated with Santa Claus. In modern dictionaries, St. Nicholas, Santa Claus, Father Christmas are synonymous. No matter how you refer to him, who better to adorn your Christmas tree than Jolly Old Saint Nick? Dressed in his familiar garb, he comes bearing a small green tree. But rather than using your front door, he is sneaking down your chimney! The place of origin of the glass ornaments is the area around Lauscha in Thuringia. In the beginning it was just a substitute for real fruit which a poor glass-blower could not afford.
